Comparison of AGID and ELISA for serodiagnosis of bovine leukemia virus infection in dairy cows.

The aim of this study is to compare the efficiency of agar gel immunodiffusion (AGID) and ELISA in detecting Bovine Leukaemia Virus (BLV) antibodies among dairy cows in Turkey. Samples of blood serum and milk were collected from 1014 healthy dairy cows in their late pregnancy between the age of 3 and 10. Samples were then subjected to AGID test and ELISA. Of the 1014 blood serum samples, 42 (4.14%) were found seropositive using AGID tests in dairy farms, seropositivity rates averaged from 2.22 to 7.5%. On the other hand of the 1014 serum samples used 191 (18.84%) were found seropositive using ELISA. For the milk samples examined, 264 (26.03%) were seropositive using ELISA while 4.14% only using AGID. It is suggested from the result of this study that ELISA is a more sensitive and specific test for the diagnosis of BLV antibodies..
