Immune response between two anti-rabies vaccines in two different schedules in rabies exposed goats.

This study was conducted to compare the immune response of goats to 2 anti-rabies vaccines (inactivated tissue culture anti-rabies vaccine and DNA combined tissue culture anti-rabies vaccine) and 2 different schedules of post-exposure vaccination (schedule I: vaccine was administered on days 0, 3, 7, 14 and 28 and schedule II: vaccine was administered on days 0, 1, 2, 3 and 4) against rabies. A total of 60 goats were used in this study. Analysis of the results indicated that both vaccines and schedules were effective in inducing protective titres up to the 90th day post-exposure. Both vaccines under schedule II produced good protection on day 7, which was very significant as far as post-exposure therapy was concerned. This schedule had the advantage of 5 consecutive vaccinations, so that there was less chance of missing and subsequent vaccination failure. The proven capability to induce early and high titred rabies virus neutralizing antibody with peak on day 14 and higher anamnestic booster response supported the value of DNA combined tissue culture anti-rabies vaccine in schedule I and schedule II and inactivated tissue culture anti-rabies vaccine in schedule II for rabies post-exposure prophylaxis in goats. All 60 goats with rabies exposure were alive after 180 days of treatment, which showed higher clinical vaccine efficacy.
