Effect of supplementation of probiotics on the control of pathogenic enteric bacteria in broilers.

48 (day old) broiler chickens were used in this study and were divided into three equal groups. The broilers were then subjected to the following treatments: Group 1 (control, no probiotics but challenged with E. coli), Group 2 was fed with minimum probiotics (contains Lactobacillus acidophilus and Saccharomyces cerevisiae) and challenge with E. coli, and group 3 fed with optimum levels of the same probiotics and challenged with E. coli. After the experimental feeding period results showed that broilers fed with probiotic supplements had miminal viable count of enteric pathogenic bacteria in the intestinal tract. Probiotic fed brids was able to resist E. coli infection without any clinical manifestation. Improved resistance to other bacterial disease is expected from the supplementation of probiotics in the formulation of feeds for broilers.
