Genetic and non-genetic factors influencing milk production traits in triple cross interbred cows

In a retrospective study of the lactation records of 429 crossbreds over a 13-year period, the first 7 lactations of 50% Friesian-25% Jersey-25% Gir, and 50% Jersey-25% Friesian-25% Gir and the first 5 lactations of 50% Brown Swiss-25% Friesian-25%Gir cows were compared with relation to total milk yield, 300-day milk yield and lactation length. Superior milk production was found in the animals with 50% Friesian inheritance. Total and 300-day yields were moderate to high in all of the crosses; heritability estimates are presented.
