Immunogenic properties of rinderpest virus proteins

Viral proteins H and F were separated by SDS-PAGE from a Vero cell adapted rinderpest virus strain, and groups of 7 rabbits were inoculated with 250μg of the proteins separately or in combination. Blood samples were taken at intervals thereafter, and on day 21 the inoculated rabbits and 7 uninoculated controls were challenged with rinderpest virus. The controls showed inappetence, increased body temperature and diarrhoea, while in the inoculated animals there was a gradual increase in serum neutralizing antibody titre, which was higher with the H than with the F protein, and highest with the combination. The good immune response indicated the protective nature of the viral proteins.
