Experiencing azuki bean production

In recent months, several processor/exporters of dry edible coloured beans have expressed interest in expanding contracted acreage into the Central Erie Counties of Norfolk, Brant, Oxford and Elgin. The type of beans include dark red kidney, cranberry, white, black, otebo, and azuki, to name a few, In 2004 several Central Erie District growers experienced their first crop of azuki beans. The red skinned azuki is considered a specialty bean that matures within 110 days and tends to prefer sandy loam soils.
