The effects of gamma rays (50, 100, 150, 200, 250, 300, 350, and 400 Gy) and ethyl methane sulphonate [ethyl methanesulfonate] (EMS; at 0.5 and 1% for 2 and 4 h) on the spectrum and frequency of chlorophyll mutations were evaluated in the M2 generation of L. sativus cv. P27. Both mutagens induced a wide spectrum of chlorophyll mutations. Certain chlorophyll mutations, such as chlorina, chlorotica and xantha, were found more frequently than the others, indicating preferential induction of certain types of mutations. A higher frequency of chlorophyll mutants was obtained using EMS compared with gamma rays. A dose-dependent increase in chlorophyll mutation rate was observed based on plant population and segregating progenies in the M2 generation. Thesegregating progenies generally yielded only one type of chlorophyll mutation. Mutagenic effectiveness, a measure of the frequency of mutations induced per unit dose of the mutagen, and mutagenic efficiency, the proportion of mutations in relation to the undesirable effects, were higher at lower doses of the mutagens. Both mutagenic effectiveness and efficiency were higher in the EMS than in the gamma ray treatment.
