BACKGROUND: Selection into postgraduate medicaltraining is a relatively under-researched topic and, as with any selection methodology, various psychometric and legal criteria must be satisfied, including reliability, validity, and fairness. This article presents evidence from a three-part longitudinal study examining the predictive validity of the selection system used to appoint trainees into postgraduate training in UK general practice. The selection methodology is designed to process several thousand applicants per year and targets six core attributes identified in a multi-method job analysis study (empathy, communication skills, problem-solving, professional integrity, coping with pressure, and clinical expertise). The selection process involves three stages:
