The anatomy of an acoustic guitar isn't too complicated. The two main components are the neck and the body. The neck has the fret-board, which runs down its length, and the head-stock, which holds the tuning keys. The body has the bridge, which anchors the strings. The size and shape of the body (resonant cavity) and the material used for the top (soundboard) interact to give a guitar its signature sound. All these factors affect basses too. An electric guitar or bass usually has a solid body and a pickup (or two or three). A pickup has a magnet and an induction coil; the pickup's location puts the guitar strings within the magnetic field. Strumming the guitar's strings disturbs the magnetic field, and the induction coil picks up these disturbances in the form of voltage and sends a corresponding current to the amplifier.
