I am currently a final-year student at Imperial College medical school. During the past eighteen months I have adopted roles in a number of simulation-based studies in the Imperial College London Simulated Operating Theatre (SOT), as part of my extracurricular research interests. This is a high fidelity simulated operating theatre that allows surgical teams to function in a highly realistic setting, supported by audiovisual review and feedback. In light of this and my previous curricular experiences, I became interested in the problems that face junior students embarking on their journey into the world of the operatingtheatre. In this article I reflect on my theatre exposure, both as a junior student and as a participant in SOT simulations, and consider how my opinions tie in with the current literature on the topic. I conclude by describing the steps I have been taking to provide a solution to the problems that I believe junior students face in the operating theatre, and to enhance the educational value of the experience.
