Looking back: A guide to foundation programme year 2 in academic medical education

Modernising medical careers (MMC) is a major reform in British postgraduate medical training that aims to streamline medical careers and training to produce doctors suited to the future health care needs of the UK. A key component is the creation of the foundation programme (FP), a 2-year, generic, postgraduate training programme run by foundation schools, which forms the bridge between medical school and specialist or general -practice training. The FP requires doctors to demonstrate their competence against set standards and develop experience in a range of specialties, and gives them the chance to gain insight into possible career options before embarking on specialist training.
