One of the major concepts to emerge from research into teaching and learning since the early 1980s has been the idea that students can be strategic in their approaches to learning. Research also shows that there is a huge qualitative difference in the learning achieved when deep, rather than shallow, approaches are chosen. However, deep or shallow approaches are not usually stable traits in individuals. The way the curriculum is designed, delivered and, most importantly, assessed, has a profound effect on the way students choose to learn. Consequently, it is reasonable to seek to encourage deep approaches to learning by manipulating these factors, and this is as true for e-Leaming as for any other form of learning.
