Lack of actual benzene start-ups during 2013 have occurred as lots of derivatives capacity has been commissioned, particularly in caprolactam and phenol. As a result, the spreads between naphtha and benzene in China have greatly improved when compared with last year. But the key question is how sustainable this improvement will prove to be, as next year will see the start-up of substantial overseas benzene capacity. January to September this year, the surge in benzene demand has been impressive in China.
