摘要

As the world struggles with the inevitability of ever-diminishing reserves of fossil fuels, considerable attention is being focused on developing alternative, renewable feedstocks such as biomass. In particular, the development of cost-efficient techniques for converting carbohydrates to key platform chemicals poses the most immediate challenge. Herein, the authors address the synthesis of medium chain primary alcohols—chosen because these materials are critical precursors of detergents, soaps, flavors and other commercially significant products. In particular, they describe a strategy for the preparation of 1-octanol, which in addition to the uses noted above can be employed for the synthesis of 1-octene.
