Jake Landers tried to step around the dry, dead, prickly pear pads, but it wasn't always easy. In some rocky places, pear pads were everywhere in varying degrees of decomposition. Sideoats grama and curly mesquite grass sprouted up green in the spotsof bare soil formerly occupied by clumps of prickly pear. In some spots, green - but yellowing - prickly pear remained. Landers examined his spring and summer's work with a visitor last fall. He explained how plans had changed and how that actually savedhim money. To control prickly pear in a pasture on his family ranch near Menard, Texas, Landers planned to install a late-winter prescribed burn and follow up with aerial spraying.
