The on-going battle to reduce diesel emissions to near-zero levels continues with the EPA 2010 HDDE (Heavy Duty Diesel Emissions) requirements. For those servicing heavy tracks who only recently adjusted to the near universal appearance of diesel particulate filters (DPFs), the 2010 models will begin showing up with a new set of technologies designed to reduce the emission of NO_x by 8.3 per cent from the 2007 levels. The progress in reducing harmful diesel emissions (unburned hydrocarbons, particulate matter, and nitrous oxides) over the last two decades has been so successful that the exhaust coming from the 2010 diesels will sometimes be cleaner than the ambient air the engines breathe. At the same time, these exhaust treatment technologies, and the cleaner air they bring, come with added costs and maintenance.
