Deepak Fertilisers and Petrochemicals (Pune, India) has abandoned plans to build a $350-million technical ammonium nitrate (AN) plant, which would have supplied explosives to the mining industry, in South Australia. This decision comes in part because of BHP Billiton's plans to delay the expansion of the Olympic Dam copper and uranium mine. "While the decision not to proceed with this proposed plant at Port Bonython is disappointing, we will continue to work with Deepak to explore other, financially feasible options," says Tom Koutsantonis, the state's manufacturing and trade minister.
