The leaf for this exercise comes from the Swamp Bloodwood (Eucalyptusptychocarpa), a northern tropical gum known for the size of its spectacular flower and large, broad, undulating leaf that is around 240mm in length. For those woodworkers who are new to rotary tool carving or have used these tools for utilitarian work only, this project is intended to build your skill level in tool handling (control), confidence in selecting the right burr for the task at hand, and ability to establish logical sequential steps for a given carving project. For those confident with these tasks including the use of rotary tool carvers, you can test your skill by seeing how thin you can carve this leaf.
