Haemophilus influenzae-induced lung hepatization.

A 35-year-old Hispanic man with medical history of acute lymphoblastic leukemia treated 6 years earlier with an allogenic bone marrow transplant and chemotherapy, diabetes mellitus II and gastroesophageal reflux disease presented to the emergency department because of septic shock with 2 day history of fever, chills, vomiting, diarrhea, chest pain and productive cough with yellowish-green sputum. Physical examination showed decreased breath sounds on the right, tachypnea and tachycardia. Initial laboratory tests showed leukocytosis with 44% bands, anion-gap metabolic acidosis and acute renal failure. A computerized tomography scan of chest showed right lobar consolidation (Figure 1). Blood cultures were positive for Haemophilus influenzae.
