Strong growth for high-impact, high-rigidity specialty polypropylenes

PTAI estimates that worldwide demand for polypropylene (including homopolymer, copolymer and TPO) amounted to about 32.2 million tonnes in 2001. The specialties segment comprises approximately 1.3 million tonnes (4.0%) of that total demand.Both Sony and Fujitsu see biodegradability as a way to avoid Japanese recycling regulations for quickly obsoleted consumer electronics. The resin to be used by both firms is Nature Works, a cornstarch-derived polyactic acid thermoplastic supplied by Cargill Dow LLC of Minnetonka, MN, USA.
