Nonresective Shrinkage of the Septum and Fat Compartments of the Upper and Lower Eyelids: A Comparative Study with Carbon Dioxide Laser and Colorado Needle

Objective analysis of the results following aesthetic surgery is one of the challenges of our field because of the lack of specific tests and comparison groups. While most studies attempt to use age-matched controls, others have studied the results following aesthetic surgery in identical twins.1 This study uses the nonconventional method of allowing the individual patient to function as his or her own control group, by performing different procedures on opposite eyelids. Although the ethical issues that could be raised regarding this study design are beyond the scope of this discussion, I would like to commend the authors on a scientific study that isolates and objectively analyzes a single variable: thermal tightening of the septum
