It's something I've hoped for a long time, said Local 2693 member John Smagner as he reacted to the specialty steel plant's reopening under new management. It's like a dream come true!Smagner was one of 304 workers to lose their jobs when Empire ceased operations at the Dunkirk, N.Y. plant last June 29. District 4 Director Lou Thomas spearheaded efforts to reopen the facility. He spent eight months coordinating activities between the union and the new ownership, while encouraging city, county and state officials to assist with monetary funding to enable the new plant to begin operations.
