Re: Hoscan et al.: Management of Symptomatic Ureteral Calculi Complicating Pregnancy (Urology 2012;80:1011-1014)

We read with interest the report in which the authors advocated the safety and effectiveness of semirigid ureteroscopy for the management of ureteral stones during pregnancy. The authors mentioned that in all women the diagnosis was confirmed using ultrasonography. However, the sensitivity of ultrasonography for diagnosing a ureteral stone is low, especially in pregnancy.1 The usual finding in such patients from ultrasonography is evidence of hydro' nephrosis, and it is often difficult to determine whether the cause of the hydronephrosis is a stone or obstruction owing to the pregnant uterus.
