Competition tight, domestic in game, JEA asks for more time

JEA officials have asked for an extension of bids for the company's recent solicitation for coal/petroleum coke to supply the St. John's River power plant. Numerous offers in a tight price range, coupled with transportation factors that will impact the purchasing decision, have made it necessary for JEA fuel buyers to ask for additional time to properly evaluate all angles of a new deal. JEA issued its latest RFP in April, asking for up to 3 million tons per year of coal for 2008 through 2012 and up to 1.1 million tons of petcoke per year for the same time frame. Bids were originally due April 26, with a decision expected in mid-May.
