Economic growth has been the unquestioned goal of every society for many years, particularly since the end of the Second World War. In a world ravaged and broken in the aftermath of conflict, people sought to build a stable and secure future with opportunities for all and economic growth appeared to be the solution. But, until the recent downturn, it seemed as if no one had stopped to consider whether the growth rate of a global economy - now almost five times the size it was half a century ago - could be sustained.This intense focus on the continued growth of the global economy has been on a trajectory directly at odds with our knowledge of the world's resources and our understanding of the environment we need to sustain in order to survive as human beings.
