Experience and learning from both Japanese and British car manufacturers have shown the value of a management approach that places less emphasis on quality tools and more on people, with a focus on cause, not symptom. To optimise improvement performance, consideration should be given to: the root cause approach process owner engagement teamwork making QA happen organisational structure quality, cost and delivery simplification of process improvement less emphasis on training the Pareto approach linking the 'what' to the 'how' SPC delegation In any organisation, targets and results have to be focused on, but in order for improvements to happen, it is essential to combat the causes of poor performance. This requires commitment to process detail. It can be difficult to take your eye off the result and focus on the process but, by addressing causes and not symptoms, this approach gives real results (see figure 1).
