IP to keep Pineville mill running due to cost cuts

As it earlier hinted,International Paper(IP)decided to keep running its 400,000 tons/yr Pineville,LA,kraft linerboard mill due to "dramatic cost improvement over the last two years," the company said last week.IP explored alternatives for the mill the last two years,including possible closure as part of its "transformation plan" announced in July 2005.But the company said that cost improvements made by the staff over the past two year made it "among the most globally cost efficient mills in(IP's)system."With global box demand expected to grow at a healthy rate,keeping Pineville as part of the containerboard system will allow the company to further integrate its box business in Europe and Asia,IP said.
