Harvest time brought more problems for those who were troubled by flooding or waterlogged soils. One Herefordshire grower who asked to remain anonymous told POTATO REVIEW that the season was nothing short of a disaster. CATHERINE LINCH has been talking to others who fared only marginally better. The BPC figure of 2.6% national crop losses due to flooding quoted in the September issue of POTATO REVIEW failed to reflect the true legacy of the torrential summer rains in parts of the country. For those worst hit, yields started at zero or crops were hardly worth harvesting -some struggling to reach 5 tons/acre. This is how the depressing story of the 2007 potato crop continued for much of Herefordshire and the west of England.
