New developments in core conflictual relationship theme (CCRT) research: a comparison of the QUAINT and CCRT-LU coding systems

Two related core conflictual relationship theme (CCRT) methodologies, the quantitative assessment of interpersonal theme (QUAINT) and the CCRT-Leipzig/Ulm (CCRT-LU) systems, were applied to psychotherapy transcripts from the treatment of 17 patients who had attended multiple sessions per week of long-term psychoanalysis. The thematic profiles of both were modified to facilitate a direct comparison of their methodological structures, including the coding systems. The QUAINT and the CCRT-LU methods were moderately related (overall k = .34). The CCRT-LU system showed greater concordance to the gold standard tailor-made method. The findings from this report also provide guidance to researchers and clinicians on the use of CCRT coding systems: the tailor-made, the QUAINT, and the CCRT-LU.
