Many studies reported systematic inequalities in the utilization of healthcare services by Chinese people, with usage in rural areas being lower than usage in urban areas. Significant differences exist in both the quantity and the quality of healthcare services. Historically, the Chinese healthcare system remains administratively hierarchical and bifurcated. One system exists for rural areas and another for urban areas.
