The incidence of weeds in white mustard plots established following various cropping systems was studied in Poland. Soyabean was grown as a monocrop, or was intercropped with potato, spring wheat or winter wheat. After harvesting, winter wheat was grown for 2 consecutive years, after which white mustard was cultivated for seed production. The preceding rotation or monoculture system had significant effects on the number of weed species and species dominance. The dominant weeds (3-6 species) accounted for 58.7-74.8% of the total weed density. These weeds were late-emerging (June-July) species, such as Galinsoga parviflora, Echinochloa crus-galli and Gnaphalium uliginosum [Filaginella uliginosa]. These results suggested the ability of white mustard in inhibiting the early-emerging weeds. The incidence of perennial weeds tended to increase when soyabean was grown as the preceding crop..
