SORGHUM SURGE

Grain sorghum is regarded as the main summer crop in Australia and in recent times has become the backbone of many livestock enterprises. Sorghum plantings have surged in recent years as this grain has established itself as of one the major players in agriculture. In past years (1992 to 1996), the average area of grain sorghum has been 500,000ha with an average yield of 1.9t/ha. In the five-year period 1985 to 1989, the average area was 178,000ha.
