Made to order for end-users, genetically altered cereal and broadacre crops aim for greater disease-resistance and higher quality grain. A decade of research by CSIRO Plant Industry has led to the first in what is expected to be a series of gene technology experiments aimed at improving the performance of wheat varieties, and the quality of the grain. Field trials were run under the guidelines of the Genetic Manipulation Advisory Committee. Commercial varieties could be expected within a decade.
