The use of near infrared spectrometry was investigated to evaluate the heterogeneity of maturation of grape bunches in a plot and between berries within bunches durng 2002-03 in France. A global model was developed in 2002, which was useful for several varieties with different regions of origin and levels of maturity. A significant relationship was observed between predicted and measured values for the refractive brix index. It is concluded that these studies demonstrated the potential of near infrared spectrometry for determining the refractive index of grapes and entire bunches..
