Classical Etching Techniques and Their Applications in the Quantitative Phase Determination of Modern and Ultrahigh-Strength Steel

When it comes to characterizing modern ultra-high-strength steels, classical metallography is faced with enormous challenges In the context of etching, where several phases occur at one time and in the context of resolution, where grain sizes are in a range of a few urn. This article is to show how it is still possible, by means of classical etching technique and images made by light microscopy, to perform quantitative microstructural evaluations despite difficult preconditions. Classical etching techniques developed by Beraha and LePera, which have been in use for decades now, are deployed when contrasting conventional steels for a qualitative and quantitative evaluation and their results are being compared. Investigations with scanning electron microscopes are made to review the results.
