Analysing the applicability of eddy current non-destructive technique for testing the wear of 'steel-steel' and 'cast iron-cast iron' tribological situations
The results of surface wear investigation of 'steel-steel' and 'cast iron-cast iron' friction pairs by the eddy current and X-ray diffraction techniques are reported. Information on the behaviour of the properties of the surface layer as it wears can be determined using an eddy current transducer, and this is verified by the X-ray diffraction analysis of the same layer. It has been found that at the stages of steady-state and heavy wear, there is a correlation between the readings of the eddy current instrument and the extent of the linear wear of the tribological contact surface.
