The ancestral human diet is discussed with reference to: paleoanthropological background; temporal and geographical considerations; data sources; lipid intake (total fats, saturated fats, trans-fatty acids, polyunsaturated fats, cholesterol); protein intake; carbohydrate intake; fibre intake; energy intake; acid-base considerations; micronutrients; and the ancestral diet as a paradigm for contemporary nutrition research. [This paper was presented at the Summer Meeting of the Nutrition Society held in Norwich, UK, from 28 June to 1 July, 2005.]
