Designers of handheld and portable embedded systems face many challenges. Changing standards and continual customer demand for new features is increasing design complexity, even as design cycles shorten. Yet, these new features can't come at the cost of battery life, so designers must continually improve power efficiency. Traditional ASIC methods are failing to meet these challenges. Fortunately, advances in FPGA technology are filling the gap.
