Traditionally, flexible epoxy passive fire protection, PFP, coatings have been used in environments where exterior durability and corrosion resistance are required. The difference in these coatings to standard paints is that they are applied at much higher film thicknesses and, as such, they can be used without the need for active methods of protection such as the activation of a sprinkler system. Many companies working in offshore oil and gas exploration are aware of the importance of using fire-protective coatings on their fixed and floating assets and will typically select a coatings system that will function in a specific operational environment, eg, where loading, storing or unloading cryogenically-cooled liquids, remains a challenging process.
