European spot prices strengthened further this week to Eur1,250-1,255/mt FD NWE ($1,712/mt) as prompt availability remained constrained. Some distribution and trading sources were caught short of product in April, as they had wrongly anticipated a downturn in April, factoring a prolonged Easter lull, which did not materialize. Ongoing domestic production issues combined with a structural shortfall in European balances sustained an inherently low stock position at European producers, market sources said. With some structural restructuring implemented in 2009, some European LDPE capacity was taken out of the market with permanent closures announced at LyondellBasell, Total and Sabic’s facilities. However the end-user demand recovery has been marginally ahead of the new start-up plants in 2010.
