Two regulatory milestones achieved for Lonza's biocides

Lonza achieved two regulatory milestones that allow for an expansion of the use patterns for its Zinc Omadine~R active agent. Many use patterns for in-can preservatives require regulatory listing of their active agents before these preservatives can be used in applications involving indirect food contact. Examples of preserved products used in applications that may potentially require biocides with indirect food contact approval include; emulsion polymers, aqueous mineral slurries, starch preparations, and inks. In the United States, the listing body most relevant for indirect food contact uses for preservatives is the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). In Europe, the listing body most relevant for indirect food contact uses for preservatives is the Federal Institute for Risk Assessment (Bundesinstitut fur Risikobewertung: BfR). FDA has listed (FCN No. 1169) Zinc Omadine~R for use in those indirect food contact applications which are commonly described under 21 CFR176.170 & 180 and BfR has accepted Zinc Omadine~R for listing under the indirect food contact applications described in BfR XIV and BfR XXXVI.
