Pesticides and biocides consist a powerful tool inthe agriculture and sanitary field, respectively, in order tosatisfy the worldwide need for food and to protect humanand animal health from unwanted pests. However, theindiscriminate misuse of these chemicals endangersenvironmental and human safety and for this reason theycan be considered as emerging pollutants. Authoritiesworldwide establish regulations and guidelines regardingthe authorization, use, monitoring and market control ofpesticides in order to protect the environment and humansafety. In this paper the data requirements for the approvalof active substances, plant protection products and biocidalproducts as regards the identity the physicochemicalproperties and methods of analysis are described. The useof monitoring data in the regulatory procedure for theestablishment of safe limits is also presented.
