The endogenous content and distribution of jasmonic acid (JA) was determined by GC-MS in healthy and infected potato plants cv. Igor grown in vitro to study the role of JA in plant-virus interactions. Plants were systemically infected with an aggressive strain of potato Y potyvirusNTN (PVYNTN). In healthy plantlets, JA was located in the shoots, whereas in PVYNTN-infected plants it was located mainly in the roots. The endogenous concn of JA was much higher in roots than shoots in all cases in infected plantlets, concn did not did not show any clear trend in healthy plants. Concn of JA in the roots of infected plantlets were always much higher than those in healthy plantlets. The most prominent symptom resulting from systemic PVYNTN infection was adecrease in the plantlet's root system. Severe disease symptoms did not occur on shoots in systemically infected soil-grown plants. The results indicate that plantlets accumulate JA in their roots as a consequence of systemic viral infection. The potential interactions between JA, viral infection and other plant growth substances are discussed. It is concluded that JA may play a role in plant-virus interactions.
