Simultaneous determinations of tau polarisation and nu(tau) helicity using the decay tau->alpha(1)nu(tau)

A method is presented to extract tau polarisation P-tau and tau neutrino helicity gamma(VA) simultaneously using tau leptons produced at the Z(0) which decay into a(1) and v(tau). It provides better sensitivity than independent fits to P-tau or gamma(VA) separately and in fact can be shown to be optimal. Estimates of sensitivity from Monte Carlo studies and comments regarding the use of the technique in experiments are also presented. We also discuss how results of tau polarisation determinations using other decay modes may be included. (C) 1997 Elsevier Science B.V.
