Registration of epidemiological studies: benefits and risks.

In 1997, the Food and Drug Administration Modernization Act (FDAMA) provided for, among many other things, the establishment of a "data bank of information on clinical trials..." The requirement for posting information was limited to trials of drugs for serious or life-threatening diseases. The National Library of Medicine established ClinicalTrials.gov in 2000 in response to this mandate, the primary purpose of which was to facilitate public access to investiga-tional drugs.
