Herrenknecht breaks another record

With Tbm diameters increasing in size, it should come as no surprise to hear that Herrenknecht has once again broken the record for the largest diameter TBM ever built. A 15.62m-diameter EPBTBM was formally handed over to Toto Costruzioni Generali of Italy during a ceremony at Herrenknecht's Schwanau headquarters in southern Germany. The giant machine will be used to excavate the Sparvo tunnel on the extension of the A1 highway between Bologna and Florence. It has taken three months to assemble the 130m-long, Herrenknecht S-574 earth pressure balance TBM, which included commissioning and testing. The machine has a weight of 4,300t and a cutterhead power of 12,000kW. It is now being dismantled at the plant and will be shipped to the work site for reassembly.
