Herrenknecht begins production of record-breaking TBM

The largest TBM ever is being prepared for the excavation of the Sparvo tunnel on the A1 highway extension between Bologna and Florence in Italy. The 15.55m-diameter Herrenknecht EPB is expected to start work in 2011, when its diameter will set a new record in mechanised tunnelling. Herrenknecht's preparations for the 4,300t TBM's assembly are well under way at its Schwanau plant in southern Germany.
