Moscow TBM makes landmark breakthrough

A Robbins EPB TBM excavating the Moscow Metro achieved breakthrough at the end of May. Not only did the 6.2m-diameter, mixed-ground machine finish earlier than scheduled, it also achieved a 37.8m advance in one day in April 2013 - a milestone for Russian EPBs in the 6-7m diameter range. The machine will now be disassembled in the receiving station site and launched on an additional 1.4km tunnel bore during the last quarter of 2013. Having been excavating since winter 2012, the TBM has achieved typical rates of 150m/week and even 621 m in one month. It is one of several Robbins EPBs working on the huge Moscow metro project, which is also seeing dozens of other manufacturers' TBMs operating simultaneously.
