The tannery processes 3,000 hides per day from the raw state to the crust condition as chrome tanned leather. The production is predominantly based on raw indigenous cattle hides, and is central to an established collection system owned by the company. This involves approximately 50 people operating from 16 hide stores spread across the collection area. The hides are purchased from farmers and small slaughter houses, and the network stretches up to 500 km from the tannery. There is considerable experience within this operation and it involves a high level of trust between the organisation and the farmers; it is firmly established as it has been steadily developed over 23 years, and the tannery is seen as a logical step in adding value.
