European Parliament Passes Cross-Border Online Music Licensing System

The European Union took a major step toward a cross-border licensing system for online music services when the European Parliament approved measures designed to loosen the grip that national collective-right management groups have on copyright holders such as musicians and record producers. The new rules, approved by the European Parliament General Assembly by a vote of 640-18 with 22 abstentions, establishes a system that will allow online music services to get licenses that cover multiple EU Member States. Currently, services such as iTunes or Spotify have to obtain licensing rights in each of the 28 EU Member States.
